New to A.I.?

The Short Answer

A Computer Program calculates. Machine Learning (ML) predicts. Deep Learning (DL) actually thinks.

Example: A Computer Program is fed "1 + 2 =" and calculates "3", Machine Learning is fed "1 + 2 = x" and, after enough tries predicts "x = 3"; Deep Learning reads "one plus two" and thinks "that could equal 'twelve' or maybe 'onetwo' or maybe 'three' or maybe 'why are you asking me such a stupid question? I've got better things to think about'." Modeled after the human brain Deep Learning thinks like a Human. Artificial Intelligence just means machine or software based intelligence which is meaningless and confusing because it refers to both ML and DL which are very different kinds of "intelligence".

The Textbook Version

It started with linear Computer Programming: IF [this] THEN [that]. Then Artificial Intelligence came which included Machine Learning (ML): a set of algorithms that enable the software to identify patterns from previous statistical outcomes and fit curves better without the need for programmer intervention, but still generally predictable. IF [this] THEN [these] NOT [those] in a feedback loop which keeps learning from user and statistical input. Within ML is Deep Learning (DL) based on Artificial Neural Networks which are modeled on human brain structure and is creative so DL is at times unpredictable. IF [this] THEN [based upon what I know, I'm gonna do something else]. DL keeps learning even without explicit feedback. DL and ML are not the same yet both are considered A.I..  DL is not the same as ML yet is within ML -- could it be more confusing?  Here is a chart that may help.
